Q: I have experienced asthma symptoms and have had several attacks, but my parents deny it. What should I do?
I have tried telling my parents that the "attacks" happen mostly when I exercise and I still have breathing difficulties and chest tightness even after I have stopped exercising, but they keep claiming that it is normal.

A: you would know if you had an actually asthma attack, its very scary and can result in death. I'm not saying that you don't have asthma though go to your doctors without your parents and he'll do peak tests and maybe send you for an xray, but he can't tell you parents if you don't want them to know. Good luck :)

Q: how to improve asthma symptoms?
what can I do to improve asthma ? I already take singulair, allergy meds, I already drink a lot of water, eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables, I already exercise quite a bit? any ideas?

A: im classed as a chronic asthmatic, and there are several things you can do to help, as well as using your inhalers when needed try taking the odd antihistamine tablet before you go out in the morning, this helps to thin the mucus that is causing your airways to block, inhaling steam doesn't work for me it makes my chest tighter, so i will use karvol tablets at night, also if your chest is bad due to a cold and you have more mucus than normal cut down on milk cheese chocolate as these are well know for thickening it up, lastly at night sleep with the window open slightly and use more pillows so you are more upright and insure you are taking all you preventatives properly, see your gp if your mucus is yellow or you are having bad chest pain as you may need a course of steroids, hope this helps

Q: Can ignoring asthma symptoms cause permanent damage?
I have broncho spasms when it is cold. But I dont mind the small coughs very much. I'm not a fan of taking medicine, I believe it is over used in this society and I should put it in my body unless i seriously need it. I know the symptoms will subisde in a couple hours on its own. If i simply dont take the medicine, such as a resuce inhaler, will there be any effects, or damage to my lungs?

A: I am an asthma sufferer, and have been for almost thirty years. I would say if you can go without medication then do so, because if you really did need to use it and you were seriously gasping for air, then you would take it. You wont come to any harm if you dont take it, but, if you do get into any serious difficulties, then you must give in and take your medication. It is there to keep you out of danger. I am assuming that you have a preventer and a reliever........I tend to use my preventer minimaly, and just enough to stop me using the reliever. In answer to your question.....no i dont think your lungs will be damaged, but, if you do have an attack of asthma, and you try to ignore it, this in turn can make your asthma worse, and the long term effects could be damage, or a serious visit to the emergency room.... Take care, and wrap up in the cold weather......hope this helps

Q: What are some asthma symptoms?
Right now, I feel that I can't breathe properly, and that I need to take deep breaths. Also, for some reason I find it harder to breathe at around evening. Sometimes when I stand up I feel light headed, but then it goes away in a few seconds. Could this be a sign that I have asthma?

A: I have asthma, allergic to shellfish. I haven't had an attack in years, but it felt like an elephant sitting on my chest, I couldn't breathe fast enough. If you think you have it, start with an OTC asthma inhaler, and talk to your doctor SOON. Try to remember what could have trriggered it- foods, smoking, pets, whatever. Good luck

Q: Is caffine known to relieve asthma symptoms?
About two years ago, 2005ish, I decided to cut almost all caffine out of my diet. Once and a while, like every 6 months, I would slip a trip to the local coffee shop. But around 2006 I started to have asthma symptoms and was diagnosed. I'm 17 by the way. This morning I was really feeling the asthma. My chest felt weak and under alot of pressure. I started coughing, big coughs ever few minutes. I was in the car with my boyfriend and he split with coffee with me. I started to feel better within 15minutes. Do you think there is a correlation? Is caffine known to do that?

A: Yes! Caffeine is a mild brochodialator, which works similarly to Theophylline. It came in really useful about four years ago. I was doing a really long run with my teammates after wrestling practice, and we had been going for about a half hour until I started feeling it really badly in my chest. Unfortunately, I was really dumb and didn't realize my inhaler was back at school, and I started walking back but I was in trouble. My breathing was getting so tough and hurt, I stopped to sit down outside of a gas station. I saw a Coke vending machine and my buddy had a dollar bill in his pocket, so I told him to get me one. He was skeptical, but I drank that Coke so fast and I could feel it working almost right away. Somewhere in the back of my head, I must of had some clue that caffeine helped me breathe better... it wasn't until that moment I was really desperate and willing to do whatever that this was proven. I'm thinking that sometimes Coke works better than my inhaler... although I'm not willing to test that theory again!

Q: would you still smoke knowing you need to use an inhaler every now and then to prevent asthma symptoms?

A: Hm...considering my laziness, I don't think so.

Q: Could caffeine make my asthma symptoms worse?
I have heard somewhere that asthmatics should not drink a lot of caffeine because it could make our symptoms worse. I wanted to know if this is true. I do drink energy drinks quite often, and I know that they have a lot of caffeine. On those days when my symptoms are bad, should I avoid drinking caffeine? Or does caffeine not affect a person's asthma?

A: well i searched and this is what i found First, Caffeine is also called methylxanthines, Theobromine and Theophylline, all have been used over the years to treat asthma. Also because hot coffee will help to relax the bronchial tubes and make it easier to breath. At least but not last, coffe are fluids, asthmatics should drink a lot of water to help to keep the lungs moist. But some of people find that their body are not suitable for coffee cure. They think caffeine make asthma worese and then they have severe asthma. So those people who find it has no help when they drink coffee, please stop and check, if possible, the medicine is a better choice.

Q: can 2D-echo and ECG detects if you have encountered heart attack symptoms? or have asthma attacks?
sometimes i experienced tightening in my chest and hard to breath..no jaw and arm numbness experienced. sometimes i woke up middle of the night and catching my breath..can this be heart attack or asthma symptoms? please help.. thanks

A: only a doc can b 4 sure, but an echo and ecg check the heart . the echo bounces sound waves off the heart and checks the functioning of the valves and the muscle itself. the ecg actually checks for damage caused by a heart attack, or checks for how the electrical activity of the heart is working. asthma is checked by performing a pulmonary function test(breathing test).

Q: Am i having asthma symptoms?
I've been sick for about two weeks, I cough and it gets worse at night because i cough so much i feel i can't breathe and end up throwing up. Im not sure if it's asthma or what. I've gone to the doctor but they didn't really mention anything about it. I've got no other symptoms and there's no signs of me getting much better. Plz help!

A: Doesn't sound like asthma. Asthma is composed of 2 conditions bronchoconstriction and airway inflammation. Coughing alone cannot definitively diagnose asthma. Asthma attacks do not normally resolve on their own..... they usually require a bronchodilator &/or a corticosteroid. Do you have sinus problems? Sometimes when people relax or lie down in bed their sinuses drain causing them to go into coughing fits. When you are experiencing a coughing fit, it is absolutley impossible to breathe correctly. Throwing up during/after a coughing fit is not abnormal. I have known and seen many people who have done this..... one of them being me. You are probably ok.... if the coughing is that bad, take some cough syrup.

Q: Asthma symptoms and weight loss?
If you or someone you know has asthma, did you/ or they notice a difference in symptoms if you were overweight and lost weight?

A: Although asthma is a form of allergy manifested by bronchial constriction, expectedly, achieving an ideal weight is best. This is just an observation that I had especially in asthmatic members of my family that those who were previously overweight who started to purposely lose weight had a decrease in the frequency and severity of attacks. Physiologically maintaining an ideal weight is beneficial to all and not only asthmatics because excess weight can cause extra cardiac and respiratory worklload.

Q: Can Clorox fumes induce Asthma like symptoms on a non-Asthmatic?
Well.... A few days ago, I took a wiz in the toilet and noticed a smell of Clorox, soon after that my chest felt tight and kept on coughing vigorously for a few minutes. I have a childhood asthma and I'm just wondering if it would have the same effect on a non-Asthmatic.

A: Yes Clorox is a bleach agent.Bleach contains sodium hypochlorite, which in most aqueous mediums, will evolve chlorine gas. Chlorine is poisonous and will kill you if you are stuck in a room with it where sufficient quantities of it exists. But before this happens, you will probably be coughing your lungs out and wheezing terribly. This is why you NEVER mix bleach with most cleaning supplies, especially those containing acids. However, the long term effects of chlorine have not been known to be of a risk. There is some theories that chlorine may break down in the body and form alkyl halides, which are toxic organic compounds of chlorine and are carcinogenic. Alkyl halides do have long term detrimental effects on health.
